It’s with great sorrow we have to write an article about loss of another renowned artist. The famous singer Sathish Perera has passed away this morning in a private hospital. Sources close to the family stated that Sathish had been ill for over a month and had been receiving treatment at a private hospital. Sathish was aged 42 and was a father of one.

The veteran vocalist and one of the best table players late Mr.Shelton Perera was Sathish’s father. Shelton Perera was also died early at the age of 49. Kumari Sashi Perera, the mother of Sathish is an Indian. Sathis has two brothers (Sanjaya, Subash) and two sisters (Anuradhaa, Anupama). His sister Anuradha Perera is also a vocalist.

Sathish is product of Ananda college Colombo. He first entered to the music field by singing his father’s hit songs “Egodaha Yanno”,”Awasan Liyumai Obata Liyanne”after the sudden death of his father in 1989. The remixed version of the two songs released in 1991/1992 period was a hit and Sathish Perra became a crowd puller to the outdoor musical shows. He launched two music albums ‘Pem Hasuna’ and ‘Egodaha Yanno’ which were also became hits. Maha Muhudu Wimane, Egodaha Yanno, Amba Damba Naran, Mihirethi Wasantha Kale, An Hematama Wada, Suwanda Rosa Mal, Kanduluwalin Pem Hasuna Liyannata, Adareta Hadu Dun Tharam, Mee pan dee Ridee Ganna were some of the all-time hits he sung which some of them were originally sung by his father.Sathish staged the Milton,Milton and Shelton musical show with Priyankara Perera and Ranil Mallawarachchi, the three sons singing songs of  yesteryear legendary singers.

Sathish Perera

Sathish Perera with Madu Madhawa, Ranil Mallawarachchi and Amila Abeysekara.

Sathish Perea was a very talented singer, but could not make a name of his own by singing original Sathish Perera songs. It is tragedy face by all the other sons who sing their father’s songs. But there are quite a few who managed to overcome this situation with courageous effort , Amal Perera is a good example for that category. Jayantha and Lelum Ratnayake sons of Victor Ratnayake also refused to sing their father’s songs to build a name in the music field.

Sathish Perera Wedding PhotosAlthough Sathish’s father was an award winning play back singer ( He recived the “Sarasivi” and “Presidential” awards for his song “Budune Budu Piyananae” in “Sasara Chethana” directed by Malini Fonseka) Sathis was not  lucky enough to render his voice as a play back singer. Music directors also have neglected this great voice being used for their film songs and Sathish Perera was recognized as an ordinary singer during his short period in the music industry. We at Lanka Help Magazine salute this talented singer and take this opportunity to convey our heart fell condolences to the family members of Sathish Perera.

Update : Sathish had been suffering from leukemia and it is the cause of death of this young artist. Sathish Perera’s wife Dinesha Perera has confirmed this. The couple has a son named Akshin Perera. The funeral will be held at 4.00 pm on Wednesday 24, April at Boralla cemetery. The body will be taken to “Kala Bhawana” at 11.00 am from his house in Pannipitiya, Kalalgoda.

“I have met you once and I think you also remember the day. We exchanged very few words but, treasured it immensely. I think that friendship meant to be forever….” Kalan 1970.09.20

That was the words Amarasiri Kalansuriya wrote in one of his female fans autograph. As mentioned in that lines that friendship became an everlasting one as Kalan eventually married the very same girl Ajantha Ekanayake. This is her story about her husband Amarasiri Kalansuriya.

“Both of us are from Kandy, My home town is Gelioya, Kalan is from Kiribathkumbura. I have sat for University entrance when I went to Kalan’s shop to buy tickets for ‘ Suba saha Yasa’ stage play with one of my friends. He was quite famous that time and I also have watched one of his films.”

“It was 9th September 1970, I first met Kalan at his shop. I wanted to talk with him and he too felt the same and we have exchanged few words. We met few times after that and I was selected to Peradeniya campus where Kalan visited very often to meet Payhiraja (Pathiraja L.S.Dayananda).

Amarasiri Kalansuriya“My university friends were surprised when they got to know that we two are lovers. Some were against our relationship as Kalan was an outsider, but there were some who helped us.”

“Our relationship was a secret to both of our families and when my father caught us talking in the campus it was the last day of my university education. It was 1971 and all the Universities were closed because of ‘JVP’ riots. The only communication method left for us was letters but the postal system also was affected by the riots. As my father was fully against of our relationship my friends have explained the situation to Kalan and we decided to marry without the blessings of our families.”

“My mother also was a Registrar of Marriage, but we managed to register our marriage secretly  and went back home as nothing happened.”

“After few months we went to house of our own and Kalan wanted me to continue my  higher studies which I refused because I was not in a mood to continue studying, and also I was pregnant that time. We have blessed with one son and two daughters.”

Amarasiri Kalansuriya and his wife Ajantha“Kalan is a very innocent character like he used to display in films, I think I am the first love of him in real life. He is not a fussy character and seldom gets angry, If he does not speak that’s the sign of he is having a discomfort.”

“Kalan does not like his children become artists, but our eldest daughter played a small scene in the film “Dorine ge sayanaya” as the daughter of Swarna Mallwarachchi.”

“My husband used to drink orange juice in the morning those days but now prefers a glass of milk. Once Denim trouser was his favorite, but said “I am too old to wear Denims now” when our eldest daughter presented a Denim trouser recently.”

“ Our eldest daughter and son are married and live separately, they use to visit us very often. Youngest daughter is staying with us, and when she goes to work we  two are alone at home. That’s when he start to  talk about our past memories”.

He played the main role in Sri Lanka’s first Tele Drama “Dimuthu Muthu”and even now many offered him characters in both films and Tele dramas, but he reluctant to accept over reasons of his own.”

Things you should know about Google Drive

Google has officially launched the long awaited Google Drive on 24th April 2012. An average person who knows about the computer understand the ‘Hard Drive’ ‘Flash Drive’ etc  associates with it that use to store data. Google drive does the same but with more sophisticated way as it’s the newest Cloud Storage device introduced to the internet users. A Cloud Storage device is a place you store your files online so that you can access them from anywhere at any time. So it can be referred as your hard drive in the sky. After you run the free Google Drive application, you get a folder on your computer (Windows or OSX) that looks just like a directory on your hard disk that you can drag your files in to. Anything stored in that folder is kept on your hard disk and also copied to your account in the cloud. You can access those files from drive.google.com or from other computers, including mobile devices.

Is Google Drive the first in Cloud Storage device in the net?

The answer for that question is No. Actually Google is very late to introduce a such facility. In the consumer cloud storage market, there are serious, well-established, and highly valued companies already up and running. Dropbox, box, SugarSync,Cubby,CX, Mozy Stash,Wuala ,Bitcasa,Microsoft Sky Drive and Apple icloud are the pioneers and alternatives to the Google Drive.

What will happen to the Google Docs ?

Google Drive is also the new name for Google Docs. Google’s suite of Web-based productivity tools such as word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation app and documents you create using these tools will show in your Google Drive from now on.

Files that you drag into your Google Drive from your hard disk are actually copied to the cloud. They’re also synchronized to your other computers that use Google Drive.

What are facilities I get by using the Google Drive?

       I.            File Synchronization

When you do changes to the file that you have stored in the Google Drive it is automatically updated not just in the cloud but on all the other devices that you have connected to the Drive. So you can start working on a file on one computer, close it, and then open it on a second computer, and what you’ll see is the version you closed on the first one.

II.            Ability to store any kind of File format or folder

Within file size and space limits, anything you can store on your hard drive can also be stored in a cloud drive. You can also move entire folders in your Google Drive.

III.            Sharing make easy with coworkers

Earlier you have to email a file or sent it stored in a portable storage device to your coworkers in order to get it reviewed or completed. Now all you have to do is email a link to a file stored on your Drive. All the services let you mark a file or folder for sharing and then invite people to view or download it.

IV.            You get 5 GB Free

Google will give you 5GB of completely free storage for storing files to use across computers, or to share, or that you need to access on your mobile device. But if you want to store large archives of photos or videos, you can pay for more storage. 25GB is $2.49 a month; 100GB is $4.99 a month.

    V.            Your Data is safe from hacking as they will be encrypted

Google Drive encrypts data between your computer and the Google servers. If you’re using your Drive over the Web, the connection defaults to secure (HTTPS), and when you use the software that makes your Google Drive appear on your computer like a local hard drive, the data between your computer and Google is likewise encrypted. No casual hacker will be able to grab your files by monitoring or intercepting your Internet connection to Google.

VI.            Access your files through your Mobile.

Google Drive is available on Android. An iPhone app also will be introduced near future. With cloud storage mobile apps, you can see what’s stored in your cloud drive easily, and then download or view files as needed. It won’t use up all your storage the moment you set it up.

What are the drawbacks in Google Drive?

  1. For the time being the files created using Google Docs tools is not stored or copied to your computers. You see in your Google Drive are links to your files. If you open one, it’ll open in the browser-based Google app.
  2. There is an element of danger associates with file synchronization. If you update a file before your cloud service has sent you the latest version, you can end up with collisions or version conflicts.
  3. You cannot sync a file that’s buried in a folder on your hard drive without dragging it to the Google Drive.
  4. The iOS apps aren’t out yet and there’s no news of versions for Windows Phones or BlackBerry.
  5. Google Drive doesn’t copy your Google Docs data to your computer, so you cannot access those files when offline.

NSB, the Savings Giant is as strong as ever before

$

National Savings Bank has celebrated her 40th anniversary on 16th March 2012. Although formed by statute in 1972, the Bank’s origin trace back to 1832. With the establishment of Post Office Savings Bank in 1885 the deposits and withdrawals were routed smoothly through the island wide Postal network. On 16th March 1972, the National Savings Bank commenced its operations by an Act of Parliament to reach the goal of effectively channeling the idle money lying in every corner of the island towards the development process of the country. The National Savings Movement, Ceylon Savings Bank and the Savings Certificates Section of the Postmaster General’s Department came under a one roof with the formation of the National Savings Bank. Even before its inception as a Bank, it was a financial institution for the little man of the country.

This article is not meant to describe the history of the NSB, but to discuss the tragedy it has to face due to a misconduct of few people in the driving seat of the Bank at present. For the last two weeks all the media, especially printed media is bombarded with the news of NSB’s controversial deal of purchasing shares of The Finance Company at an inflationary rate. The ill fated deal was worth Rs.390 Million and created a much chaos among the business community, opposition political parties and especially in the Colombo Stock Exchange. Economists, Financial Analytic and politicians criticized the deal in every possible way providing all the details about the transaction so that the business community and the people that have some sort of business mind have fully updated about the situation.

But those economists and analytics have neglected the majority, which are the common people. The people who have built up the assets of the NSB by saving Cent by Cent and Rupee by Rupee. It is the NSB the bank of the little people who has inculcated the savings habit among the people. The burning questions of them not answered were

  1. Will this ill fated transaction lead the Bank to bankruptcy?
  2. Will this become another Pramuka Bank scenario?
  3. What will happen to our money deposited at NSB?
  4. Is it safe to keep our deposits there?

The NSB itself and even the Central Bank fail to answer those questions to date. The media itself unable to educate the general public about the same. The main objective of this article is to answer those burning issues.

The NSB has an asset base of over Rs. 400 Billion and a deposit base of Over Rs.411Billion, the third largest bank in term of deposit base and forth largest bank in term of asset base in Sri Lanka. NSB’s annual average deposit mobilization is over Rs.25 Billion which means it mobilized over Rs.2 Billion per month. The value of controversial deal was Rs.390 Million which is not a considerable amount when compare with the deposit base. Being a licensed specialized bank, NSB has to invest minimum of 60% of its deposits mobilized in Government Securities which carry zero risk. Another large amount grant as House & Property Loans, Pawning and Loans against deposits which again have minimum risk. The Bank invests relatively a small percentage in dealing securities which consider as invest in shares ( The NSB – TFC deal was also comes under this category). Therefore NSB received the Fitch rating of ‘AAA’(lka) for the ninth consecutive year in 2011/2012 and also was the first Sri Lankan bank to clinch the coveted ‘AAA’ rating. And last but not least your money with NSB bears the 100% Government security, the ultimate protection one could ever get.

So with the Savings giant your money is 100% secure and there is no risk of bankruptcy whatsoever. NSB recorded a pre Tax profit of Rs.8.9 Billion for the year ended 2011. The huge chaos created in the business field was due to the nature of the ill fated deal. Authorities have taken actions to reversal the transaction but the damage has done for the goodwill of the Bank. An action of very few people has tarnished the image of the NSB. When the business tycoon Harry Jayawardane tried to get the owner ship of Sampath Bank, the bank staff, general public, priests and media were get-together to chase the dirty Harry. Now it is time to help the NSB to overcome this tragedy so come forward and show your loyalty and faith to the little man’s Bank.

Her marriage was not a bed of roses; she has just started to color the painting of love in rainbow colors when the canvas was torn apart by a violent storm. The mansion of love they built together was shattered like a mirror that cannot be re- fixed.

My marriage was broken, yes that’s the truth. The main reason is he couldn’t understand me and my feelings. I didn’t want to protect my marriage as it was brutally ruined by the other party.

It was not a secret anymore that, my husband has hit me and harassed me. There was no option left for me other than the divorce for which I made up my mind. After all what else I could hope from a husband who used to harass his wife in every possible way?

She was hospitalized for several days after assaulted by her husband.

Recalling the dark memories of her ill-fated marriage, Upeksha Swarnamali has disclosed her future dreams to a weekend newspaper recently.

‘My marriage was over, but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to be single forever. I will definitely marry the person who could understand me and the responsibility of a marriage. But unfortunately I haven’t met him yet. ‘

‘The dream of becoming a good wife and mother and enjoy a good family life is still with me. I always cherish that dream because I love to become a mother and it’s the most important hope in my life, but who knows whether I’m lucky enough to fulfill that dream?’

‘If I’ couldn’t fulfill that dream I like to help children with no parents in an orphanage. I will contribute my wealth to build up their future which will be self-satisfaction for me. Even if I’m not become a mother I can be a mother to all the children in the world, because I adore kids.’

‘I don’t know whether I would continue my political life, it will be decided within the next two years, but I definitely continue my higher studies, especially finishing my studies in Law and becomes a Lawyer is my ambition. I think it is essential to have a good education to face the challenges in the life.’

‘I like to dress in beautiful clothes, enjoy a good family life and become a good wife and mother like any other woman in the society. Life is where you get both what you expected and what you don’t expect.’

‘Now I’m strong enough to face the future challenges in my life.”

The life of Upeksha Swarnamali as an actress and a Parliamentarian may face changes in future, as Upeksha has mentioned the life is full of surprises and cannot be predicted. Life is like an ocean, the same ocean once calm and quiet can be rough and violent. Upeksha is yet another ordinary woman who is sailing a boat in the ocean of life. We take this opportunity to wish this courageous lady all the success in her future endeavors.

The Spice Council of Sri Lanka has begun a three year project to research whether Cinnamon can be used to control diabetes. The Chairman of the Spice Council of Sri Lanka Mr Sara De Silva revealed that, 650 diabetes patients visit to Peradeniya Hospital and National Diabetes Centre Battaramulla will be put on a test and monitored. The patients will be divided in to two groups and one group will be given a tablet containing Cinnamon while the other group given a tablet does not contain Cinnamon. If the researchers can prove excessive usage of tablets containing Cinnamon can control diabetes it will be a revolution in Sri Lanka’s Cinnamon trade.

cinnamon sticks with leaves‘University of Peradeniya and Ministry of Agriculture joint with us to perform this research to the International Standards. If we succeeded then the future of Sri Lankan Cinnamon will be fruitful’ said Mr.Sara De Silva.

History of Cinnamon in Sri Lanka goes beyond 15th Century. Arabians were the first to dominate in the Cinnamon trade which Portuguese captured in 16th Century. Then it was Dutch seized the world’s largest Cinnamon supplier Ceylon, from the Portuguese. Systematic cultivation of Cinnamon in Sri Lanka was commenced by the Dutch, and by the time the British took over, there was an estimated 15,000-16,000 hectares under cultivation. Originated in the central hills, cinnamon cultivation is presently concentrated along the coastal belt stretching along from Kaluthara to Matara, it has also made inroads to the inland of Kalutara, Ambalangoda, Matara and Ratnapura. The extent under cinnamon in Sri Lanka is 25,500ha.

Sri Lanka has 95% market share in the World’s Cinnamon trade as it is has an international recognition as “True Cinnamon”. There is another variety which can be seen commonly sold as Cinnamon in European countries, namely “cassia” or “Chinese cinnamon.” But Sri Lankan Cinnamon has more delicate taste and a high demand internationally. But unfortunately Sri Lanka has not made any value addition for this spice and if they do so it will become one of the main income sources of the Country.

Health Benefits of Cinnamon

In traditional medicine, cinnamon has been used for digestive ailments such as indigestion, gas and bloating, stomach upset, and diarrhea. More recently, modern medical research has turned its eye on cinnamon and is coming up with some intriguing results. It has a mild anti-inflammatory effect. It also slows the spoiling of food (which is probably related to why it was used as an embalming agent in ancient Egypt), and has anti-fungal properties as well. The essential oil, eugenol, has been in therapeutic use in dentistry as a local-anesthetic and antiseptic for teeth and gum.

Culinary uses of Cinnamon

Cinnamon spice is widely used as a spice around the World as it is a principle condiment and flavoring base. This spice is generally ground just before preparing dishes and added at the last moment in the cooking recipes, because prolonged cooking results in evaporation of essential oils so it keep the fragrance and flavor intact. In Asian and Chinese dishes it is being used in marinating chicken, fish and meats. Indian vegetarian and chicken curries and rice dishes (biriyani) contain small amounts of grounded powder. In the Middle East, it is used in meat and rice dishes.

Other uses of Cinnamon

Perfumery, Aromatherapy, Soaps, Cigarettes and Cosmetics

Adverse Impacts

In traditional medicine, high doses are not given to pregnant women, due to possible stimulating effects on the uterus. Uncooked cinnamon spice can cause choking and respiratory distress. Excessive use of the cinnamon stick may cause inflammation of taste buds, gum swelling, and mouth ulcers. Large quantities can cause difficulty breathing, dilate blood vessels, and cause sleepiness, depression, or even convulsions.

It’s not a haapy ending for Arjuna and Amisha

Popular film stars Arjuna Kamalanath and Amisha Kavindi has split. It’s not for another scene in a film to come but for real. The two of them had a long relationship that was quite popular in the film industry. Amisha played a main role in Arjuna’s latest film”Igillenna ayi Dangalanne” with Arjuna.

However the film was suddenly removed from the cinemas while the news spread that Amisha has left the country because she is having an affair with another guy. When Arjuna was asked what’s the actual behind the rumours spread, he said

‘Yes, it’s true that we have broken-up our long relationship, but it happened about six months ago. We have decided to stop it due to the miss-matches in our horoscopes. It was not an easy decision for both of us because we have both our parent’s blessings for our love affair.”

“Amisha and I visited several of astrologers and all advices us not to proceed our relationship any further, and it was them who advice Amisha to left the country for couple of years. So she has gone to stay with her sister in Doha Quatar.”

Arjuna came to the Hiru Television Talk Show “Niro & Stars” about two weeks back and was asked when they are getting married. He simply said that “ When time comes we are not ready and when we are ready it’s not the right time to marry.”

Arjuna Kamalanath first entered to the silver screen on year 2000 in film “Thisaravi” while Amisha came to the lime light in 2009 in Roy De Silva’s “Sir Last Chance”. Arjuna was the closest successor for the legendary star Vijaya Kumaranatunga, having the same features and the talents to capture the hearts of the cinema lovers in the country. Although Arjuna worked with several actresses, Amisha used to act with Arjuna most of the time. Some accused Arjuna not allowing her to act with other actors but he denied it. Amisha played a very romantic scene in “Igillenna ai Dangalanne” with Arjuna and said that she would not be able to do such a scene other than Arjuna.

A couple of years ago Arjuna stated that;
“I was searching for a partner with similar tastes and expectations. Ameesha fit the role as she is serious about developping her acting skills. She concentrates on movies and does not take on projects like mega teledramas seeking publicity,”

According to Arjuna two of them are still good friends and even Amisha used to call him twice a week.
“In fact Amisha was so disappointed with the industry, that she was ready to give-up acting after this film. A well-known director and an actor was behind removing our film from screening, and that made her leave the country so soon.”

In films we always like to see a happy ending, but unfortunately these talented young couple could not make it a happy ending.

Nirosha Virajanie Keeps Love On Hold

“Love is not a priority for me at the moment. It is true that our thinking changes over the time. Also, some gain their life satisfaction by marriage and having two or three children. But at present I enjoy engaging in music alone. Music gives me a peace of mind.  I’m not going to ruin it. It doesn’t mean I will remain single rest of my life;  Things may change in future and no one can predict about future”. Comments Nirosha Virajanie in an interview with a weekend newspaper.

Nirosha Virajini is regarded as most accomplished singer with melodious voice in Sri Lankan music arena. She has been able to keep her popularity steady over the years now. Despite facing many turbulences in her personal life, particularly, marriage life, it seems that she is now more focused on music.

Nirosha Virajini

I have released couple of songs recently with senior lyric writers and composers. Before that I have worked with several talented new composers and lyric writers. As a judge in music re

ality shows I have seen many talented singers. Unfortunately, most of them failed to make their existence after the competition as they thought it’s the responsibility of the TV channels to guide and help them in their career. Only very few of reality stars like Shihan Mihiranga and Amila Perera have managed to keep their popularity”.
Commenting on songs done to be sold as ‘ringing tones’ to mobile phone companies Nirosha said that only the songs with simple words can be used for that purpose and she did not target the ringing tone market for her new songs. Nirosha was also blamed for singing the late Malini Bulathsinhala’s all-time favorite “Himi nathi pemakata “for a ringing tone but she thoroughly denied that saying;

“The lyric writer of the particular song was in a crisis and decided to sell it for a ringing tone. I had the permission from the music composer as well for this venture to help the senior artist. If anyone can prove I have earned a Rupee from that song, I am ready to apologize in public.”

“ It’s a universal law that the lyric writer and the composer are the co-owners of a song, if I make an issue over another being singing my songs then I will make a fool of myself. If I sing ‘Rukmani Devi’s song for a show it doesn’t mean it belongs to Nirosha Virajani. Likewise I’m happy if my songs will be sung by others after my death because the people know that the songs were originally sung by me.”
